Overview

Heavy-equipment operators need repeated, hands-on safety training. Offsite courses are expensive, and on-the-job mistakes are dangerous. One Reality built TwinSite — a VR construction-site safety training platform in Unreal Engine 4 — and deployed it for Ramirent and Loxam.

The platform ships two courses: Cutter VR, which trains operators on concrete cutter use, and Silica Dust VR, which teaches the health hazards of crystalline silica. A physical motion tracker attached to a real concrete cutter gives trainees high-fidelity interaction, while the Silica Dust course shrinks users to microscopic scale inside lung tissue to witness cell damage firsthand.

Both courses run entirely in UE4 Blueprints, keeping the small development team productive without extensive C++ work. The result: up to 4x cost savings over traditional offsite training, test scores averaging above 90%, and completion in under one hour per course.

Challenge

Construction sites are inherently dangerous — heavy machinery, hazardous materials, and high-stakes environments where mistakes can injure or kill. Training operators traditionally means either expensive offsite courses or supervised on-the-job sessions, both of which scale poorly and carry risk.

Replicating these scenarios in VR required building immersive, physically accurate simulations that would transfer real-world skills — not just test knowledge. The team also needed to deliver this with a small crew, without relying on deep C++ expertise, while animating realistic interactions with real equipment like concrete cutters.

Solution

One Reality built the entire platform in UE4 Blueprints, which let the small team produce content with minimal C++ programming. For Cutter VR, they developed a custom motion capture system by attaching a physical tracker to a real concrete cutter — when a trainee swings the tool, their virtual counterpart mirrors the action exactly.

Silica Dust VR took a different approach. The course shrinks users to microscopic scale so they can witness silica particles damaging lung cells firsthand. This isn't a lecture with slides — trainees see the biological impact at a visceral level, which drives the safety message home far more effectively than traditional methods.

Result

The platform delivered training at up to 4x lower cost than traditional offsite courses, with average test scores above 90%. Both courses — learning and testing combined — take under one hour to complete, fitting neatly into on-site appointment slots.

Over 400 people have been educated on silica dust hazards alone. The physical tracker on the concrete cutter gives operators muscle-memory familiarity before they ever touch real equipment, reducing on-site incidents and improving confidence.

Key Takeaways

Takeaway 1Immersion triggers physical reflexes — users spontaneously cough when they see dust particles, proving the VR experience registers at a level beyond conscious learning.
Takeaway 2The "temporary factory" concept models everything needed to erect a building, meaning a single VR environment can train operators across multiple equipment types and scenarios without rebuilding from scratch.
Takeaway 3A single digital asset can serve triple duty — the same models built for training also power product demos and marketing materials, reducing total content production cost.
